Is it important to reduce the LOC count (lines of code) of your program? Yes! But only if you can reduce it by an order of magnitude (e.g. ~10k to ~1k). Smaller reductions, like local tweaks, are often not worth the mental effort for other team members reading the code.
I feel a lot of this is often related to finding the right data structures / abstractions. Once you get them right, you can remove a lot of glue code.
