i'm sure if i knew the one true way, i could use just the right distro and packages, but it shouldn't be my job to become a connoisseur

I just don't have any idea what I need. All my windows are command line and web browser. I run nm-applet and blueman-applet and pasystray for network, bluetooth & audio control. Window manager is awesome. I don't know what else I might need.

Amen. I think the hardest part of this all might be to discover these are the things you need in the first place. Like I just did (literally, I'm gonna install these things haha). Having a command-line first flow can be scary tho, especially if you're not already used to it.

i have no qualms with a fully-configured, fully-installed linux system, i have qualms with the path to getting there. installing and configuring software is still kafkaesque, apt-get is just as bad as it was years ago

Hehe, I switched to Pacman and oh man it's amazing! It's just that Arch takes so much extra work to get started right haha.

not to hype homebrew too much, but _it works_ and thankfully it has become a de-facto standard. oss package management on macOS is gloriously not very fragmented, everyone contributes to the same project

There still seem to be inevitable tangles bringing on newcomers with Homebrew. Our company Boxen install was a true beast, thankfully now with more Node dev much much less so.

Dealing with having a not-an-OS-but-close stuffed into weird places atop an existing OS seems suboptimal, seems like pain is inevitable. OSX upgrades seem dodgy. As compare to say Debian- through & through reliable, working, & consistent. Standard.

A couple dozen developers here probably spent a man-year dealing with networking issues pertaining to various incarnations of Docker for Mac. Utterly disorganized, everyone out there trying to figure out what they could hack to fastest or best reduce their issues.

When I make a Debian image, these are the lists of packages that I use. I can't think of any other major system configuration I do, besides copying in a .zshrc, connecting to wifi/bt (nm-applet/blueman-applet).https://github.com/rektide/compfuzor/blob/master/vars/pkgs.yaml …
