every few years, use linux for a little bit to check that it's still terrible

wfm. no idea what the problems are. i'd way rather wrangle linux problems than be made to mutely suffer under some unruly uppity commercial os.

when i was running linux in 2009 i expected people to unify under common, robust solutions. every time i look back, it's more fragmented and average quality is still incredibly low.

i'm sure if i knew the one true way, i could use just the right distro and packages, but it shouldn't be my job to become a connoisseur

I just don't have any idea what I need. All my windows are command line and web browser. I run nm-applet and blueman-applet and pasystray for network, bluetooth & audio control. Window manager is awesome. I don't know what else I might need.

Amen. I think the hardest part of this all might be to discover these are the things you need in the first place. Like I just did (literally, I'm gonna install these things haha). Having a command-line first flow can be scary tho, especially if you're not already used to it.

i have no qualms with a fully-configured, fully-installed linux system, i have qualms with the path to getting there. installing and configuring software is still kafkaesque, apt-get is just as bad as it was years ago

Hehe, I switched to Pacman and oh man it's amazing! It's just that Arch takes so much extra work to get started right haha.

not to hype homebrew too much, but _it works_ and thankfully it has become a de-facto standard. oss package management on macOS is gloriously not very fragmented, everyone contributes to the same project

Oh yeah, thats pretty neat! It does have some weird rules & limitations, but the good definitely outshines the bad for sure. Idk, I think by the very nature of Linux that might not be happening anytime soon for the OS. Ghmmm.
