I just don't have any idea what I need. All my windows are command line and web browser. I run nm-applet and blueman-applet and pasystray for network, bluetooth & audio control. Window manager is awesome. I don't know what else I might need.
Amen. I think the hardest part of this all might be to discover these are the things you need in the first place. Like I just did (literally, I'm gonna install these things haha). Having a command-line first flow can be scary tho, especially if you're not already used to it.

i have no qualms with a fully-configured, fully-installed linux system, i have qualms with the path to getting there. installing and configuring software is still kafkaesque, apt-get is just as bad as it was years ago

Hehe, I switched to Pacman and oh man it's amazing! It's just that Arch takes so much extra work to get started right haha.
