Since it’s append only, is there any way to delete a post?

Not after it has synced with your friends. That would require invasively changing their databases. Deletion doesn't make much sense in digital systems if making copies is cheap and easy

I’ve deleted Facebook posts from years ago that I am now embarrassed by. Political stuff, etc. If there’s no way to delete posts, that seems (IMO) to be somewhat of a privacy issue. Perhaps that’s the point and you shouldn’t post anything you aren’t absolutely sure about.

Clicking delete on a post on FB doesn't guarantee it's deleted from Facebook's servers either — or removes screenshots people took. You always have to be careful with what you share.
