I wonder how the DOM will be able to add new attributes/properties to HTML since it can break custom elements that already use those names.

Not like anyone follows this rule, but that's why the "data-" prefix is recommended, right?

For custom elements (e.g. <my-thing>)? My impression is people expect arguments to work without data- in API in them.

I would assume that the custom implementation would take preference. So if you use an attr & later the browser introduces one, it's ignored
