Isn't is something JS engines can optimize though? I saw some efforts recently in V8 to optimize closures that act like prototypes.

Sufficiently smart compiler argument isn't a great argument.

Compilers optimize the code we write. We should optimize style for something other than current VM optimizations or we'll never progress.

Write the code that is easiest to maintain, easiest to understand, the simplest and most elegant.

Only sacrifice those for performance when needed by actual problems. Never sacrifice usability in the name of premature optimization.

That said, my code tends to be very fast the first time. I guess understanding how VMs work helps me avoid the giant performance mistakes.

When I complained to @mraleph about how closures we're slower than prototype instances he told me V8 could optimize for closures.
