Isn't is something JS engines can optimize though? I saw some efforts recently in V8 to optimize closures that act like prototypes.

Compilers optimize the code we write. We should optimize style for something other than current VM optimizations or we'll never progress.

That said, my code tends to be very fast the first time. I guess understanding how VMs work helps me avoid the giant performance mistakes.
