Good point, I hadn't considered dtrace. I've been reading the Google dapper tracing paper and they do heaps of explicit stuff hmm
I'm confused now. What's the difference between logging and tracing? After reading more about tracing, the lines seem super blurry.

My understanding is tracing is abt how info flows through a distributed system. Logging is isolated to a single system but can be aggregated

Ah, but on a single system, logging is explicit while tracing is implicit. At least that is how I classify.
