I don't understand how webpack go so popular with their "take a day to configure this" on-boarding process.

IMHO it's mainly because the alternatives (i.e. browserify) lack some pretty critical features for large scale apps.

yes, "those features exist" in browserify land, but more scattered and support is not as strong.
