“No one uses jQuery anymore” because native browser DOM APIs finally caught up, not because React exists. The basics are in the browser.

This is not to say that people shouldn’t use jQuery or React. They are rad tools! And it’s good and important to learn the browser APIs too.

One might even *start* with vanilla JS — surprisingly powerful nowadays — and graduate up to a library like React once the basics are solid.
