I work on a 12" screen. If anything is more than 80 chars wide / cannot be grasped in half a screen's worth of height it's useless for me

shouldn't visual text wrapping in your editor do the trick? Passing your constraints on others not nice. Agree on height tho.

nah, but you could cater to the junior dev: eg assume less comment more. Stay sharp as to what they struggle with and fix it
