People are talking import v require compat again, and all I'm left wondering is what benefits import has other than: "It's a spec, stupid"

haha yeah, but rollup's just a tool; sure it'll work better with import, but the same method should also work for require

I'd say it's much harder with require. Different mechanism, static vs... um... not static.
