I'm no Rustacean, but I hear Rust is an option for this. (maybe https://github.com/tsgates/rust.ko ?)
Don't like the fact that if you're going to build anything that might become a kernel module it has to be written in C :(

interesting - believe the hurdle then is that Rust code will never ever become part of the kernel itself - which imo is ok
