I'm thinking about ideas for how to recognize excellence in the Node.js community -- what do folks think of community awards?

I like this idea. Maybe we should maintain a list of modules that need help with maintenance?
curious what you mean by "help with maintenance" - in that they're struggling technically, or not only that per se?

My thinking was mainly just availability of people to review PRs, make bug fixes for reported issues, etc.

I think the social aspect might be important than the technical one; have experienced folks that can mentor & guide
