it strikes me that there's two very different perceptions of how node-the-project relates to the larger community, and this is causing pain.

neither perspective is wrong, but neither is _entirely_ right — and the mismatch between them makes for some really painful interactions
@isntitvacant comments like these are important; can't find a middle ground if you don't have any perspective of the other side.
