does anyone have strong opinions about panic behavior? disclaimer: I'm not advocating for changes to panic behavior in std or elsewhere, that said.. I am of the opinion that panics should bring down the process immediately, from any thread, panic=abort is the better default imo

I agree panic=abort is probably the right default. Logging an error and rebooting a program is often easier to implement well than the alternatives — not correctly recovering from an error can mean silent resource starvation — and that's really hard to debug.

Speaking mostly from the perspective of webby things: if done well most reqs should either be idempotent or transactional. The case of a process crashing should always be handled already thru restarts/rollbacks— so considering it smth that could happen regularly is imo not bad.
