Have you ever played with property-based state machine testing? It's not supported in every property-based testing lib, unfortunately. Although not required, having things in the right shape of a state machine at the start makes lobbing random data at them much easier and fun!

Compile time state transitions are not that useful anyway because they're always driven by runtime events
