Other than rebinding my main key to C-a, I usually don't like to rebind many other things. It's especially useful when dealing with remote sessions — C-a targets the local tmux instance. C-b (default binding) targets the remote instance.

The one problem I had with rebinding C-a is that it has a useful default binding in the shell (to jump to the beginning of the line) - I settled on C-q in the end as it's in a convenient position and has no useful default

Oh I didn't think of that. The reason this has not been an issue for me is because I configured bash to use vi bindings: $ set -o vi
