Mnemonics and spaced repetition seem to be working really well for me for learning languages. I wonder if this approach would work well for other topics as well. This method was never part of my formal education, but maybe it could've helped?

Hard to say if you just got started. (the initial push is always the hardest...) I'd say stick to a textbook for starters if you don't have huge amounts of time and energy to sift though a lot of material to find something interesting.

But be sure to 1) Not slow it down. You don't need to understand 100% at once, it's more important to get a lot of input, so just proceed with the text 2) I get that you're hyped about being able to read hiragana now, but don't forget to listen to the audio also!
