The thing that annoys me about UK rail isn't that it's not really high speed. That's usually not a problem and let's be honest, the UK is small enough to mostly get away with it. No, it's that trains are so fucking expensive. You can't have shit infrastructure AND be expensive

If only trains were handed the same subsidies as planes. No tax on fuel allows travel to be *cheap* for consumers.

Oh I guess in addition to that: VAT on plane tickets is not a thing. Airport tax is meant to make up for it — but I'm interested in the breakdown that makes a 40 euro international flight vs how costs are spread for trains.

They lowered VAT to 7: on train ticket in Germany now, which is a nice start

Oh cool! Just looked it up for the Netherlands, and the conservative gvt apparently raised train taxes from 6% to 9% last year. Argh.

do note, that those taxes are only paid by individuals,, work should reimburse the costs of travel and they don't pay those taxes. (also the most expensive train trip I could take was 27e, Maastricht -> Leeuwarden)

also for 320e/m you can get a subscription on the train, :) so pay once and go on every train you like for the month, for 84 euros more you get to use all public transport,, it's fucking great tbh. also -loads- of discount cards to go to certain themeparks etc.

Most people don't have 400 euros a month to spend tho.
