I've got hot takes on protocol buffers but no energy to share them with u.
My understanding is that in practice parsers now need to traverse protobuf structs twice now: once to figure out the schema, another to parse it according to the schema. This might be fast enough for RPC in web services, but it isn't for many resource-constrained systems.
