Want: @code "remote explorer" backend that can target remote desktops.
Wish I could target my home workstation from my laptop. Would make it feasible to hack on projects such as rustc remotely (because I really don't want to open an SSH server on my Windows workstation lol)
Maybe the trick to getting this to work is to enable "remote desktop", and then use the "live share" feature to start a session with myself; driving the remote machine. Would be nice if this was supported as a first-class workflow though.

Shot in the dark, as I don't use VS, but saw someone referring to https://github.com/cdr/code-server the other day and it looked interesting. Could it help your usecase?

Maybe! - Thanks for linking!

Do you want the processing power (for editor or just compilation) of the remote machine? Or just the files? RDP or sccache is probably the answer for the former, and SMB is probably the answer for the latter.

yeah def thinking about RDP here; but made convenient so it just works as "yet another backend" for
@code.
