It's fun to do for a while. Learned a lot in the process. But then like, I want to spend less time behind computers, and more time doing other things. And having high-maintenance things for the sake of having them definitely doesn't help.

Also did you know GitHub for Desktop auto-generates commit messages for you? If you move a file it'll generate message saying it moved the file. Same for additions, edits, etc. This should be default git behavior, really.

Databases have a huge price performance overhead for managed services. Most providers under-charge for compute so you get stuck in over-charged and difficult-to-migrate-away-from data services. But for small personal usage the managed service prices can be NBD for some engineers

Yeah that's exactly the case for me — throughput is incredibly low for all my stuff, yet time cost is high. When priced in the same range it doesn't make sense for me to host my own.
