I know why it's often useful, but cargo allowing you to have two incompatible versions of the same dependency can really bite you when you're new to Rust.

It probably depends on your background — this is the same dependency resolution mechanism as in Node.js. Not being able to do this would probably also bite people. Very glad the new diagnostics for this are available though. Hopefully that'll take the edge off for most cases ^^.
