how is it even remotely possible that the tcp interface in rust, a low-level systems language, is like 100x nicer than that in ruby or node.js

Furiously agree with this. Not just the API itself feels better, having access to examples and documentation makes Rust's TCP stack so much easier to pick up than Node's.
