Oh cool, there are proposals for this. But don't seem to be progressing much?https://github.com/microsoft/language-server-protocol/issues/513 …

I guess I'm coming at this with a question of: "How much work would it be to write an editor from scratch?" And the answer is: "If you want to do it right there's no end to it, because supporting *all* languages perfectly is manual work."[1] That doesn't seem right.

[1]: it's possible to build on the work of parsers such as tree sitter for this, so it's not quite as bad. But it'd still be nicer to only have to implement a single point integration.

I wouldn’t say that every editor needs to implement syntax highlighting for every language. Most of the work is implementing a generic highlighting algorithm that can handle arbitrary grammars. And the grammars themselves can be shared between editors.

Heh, yeah I agree with this. I guess only difference I'm thinking of is that since language servers already do parsing regularly, making it part of language servers might perhaps be the simplest.
