Something people often don't realize is that batteries and chips have a real, human cost. Take a common material used in lithium-ion batteries: Cobalt. 60% of it comes from Congo, where about 35.000 kids work in the mines.https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/oct/12/phone-misery-children-congo-cobalt-mines-drc …

Working in a mine is labor that will break any adult's body in record speed. Let alone that of a child. And with scooters that have a lifespan of 30-60 days that means they burn through batteries alone at an astonishing cycle.

I'm of two minds about this - you bring up really good points, but I'm unsure about making it harder for car alternatives to take off. I want above all else (in regards to Berlin transit) that it becomes harder to use a car in Berlin and easier to use some other sort of transit.

So far I've rarely seen scooters on car roads; the majority of them seem to prefer either foot or cycle paths. But if you're serious about wanting to take back the streets; critical mass assembles every last Friday of the month. It's fun, join sometime!

Sadly in Germany our rather uninformed transport minister is excited about the scooters and promotes them. I think there is even an emoji that shows how he looks when experts are talking:

The amount of space on city roads would be juust right if it was only bikes and scooters on there
