Viewing fascism as an ideology that stems from the desire for a shared identity seems spot on. Paradoxically the desire to unify is what divides. You can't be inclusive, and only accept a single viewpoint. Through this lens authoritarianism feels like a symptom, not a cause.

We have a saying in the Netherlands: "Doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg." — "Act normally, because that's weird enough." And idk, the idea of there being a "normal" that we ought to adhere to feels really off. It def feels in line with desiring a shared identity.
