Got a pile of essays lying around that rile against the notion of "value" in the first place. Might do myself a favor and read them during my vacation.

My understanding of the essays is that when people talk about some things being hard to place a value on (for example helping ur neighbours), the problem doesn't lie with that action it being hard to value. It lies in the fact that value itself is an inadequate framing.

things that I build for myself and share tend to be much more widely used than things I build for money based on provided requirements, even if the artifacts are also open source
