I've heard good things about Rusotto, though I don't know enough about AWS to judge if it makes things simpler compared to regular S3.

rusoto just seems like an api wrapper for aws in general - there's some s3 stuff in there but it feels like i can't properly use it without first understanding the underlying api

Rusoto (as well as the official SDKs) are generated from the internal RPC definitions. Knowing what http://docs.rs does, you mainly want to look at API references like https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/API/RESTObjectPOST.html … and find the appropriate generated Rusoto code.
