There are a lot of tradeoffs but the main thing is if you care about low latency for durability you're better off relying on replication instead of local disk reliability

Then if you only care about process reliability instead of power loss/ kernel panics and you're using normal buffered IO then maybe you don't need fsync. You need fsync or O_DIRECT if you need fine grained control over the ordering of writes to a file (log-like)
