I think the unstructured back/forth is why I tend not to want to engage in GitHub-based design discussions. It's hard to keep track of claims, arguments, and proof when you're 40 comments in, spread over 3 threads. And the upvoting / downvoting really adds to that Reddit feel.
I think for me the thing is that these kinds of threads feel like an emotional man-hole. You can climb in, you can climb out, but the result's never pretty. I think we can, and should do better.

I like to hash out designs by chatting with collaborators over irc or irl. It's more focused and usually people have a shared context to go from.

another problem is that "open source" for more visible projects is very consumption-oriented: a lot of users make demands on a small set of contributors
