I have had this conversation with many white Dutch people, and their defense of Zwarte Piet always boils down to "Americans get offended because of THEIR history with slavery, but we're different", and like... ...do Dutch kids not take history classes?https://twitter.com/harikondabolu/status/1077746135043923973 …

History classes in the Netherlands are skewed as hell. The time of spice trade east (VOC) + slave, gun, cotton trade west (WIC) is referred to as "the golden age" in history books. "We should create a new golden age" has been proclaimed by more than one politician.

A lot of the history seems to be focused on how things worked, but like in a detached way. As if they're facts that exist in a vacuum. I felt in my classes very little attention was given to the consequences of the actions themselves. Other than it making the Netherlands wealthy

Another point: our colonies. Why do we have them? How did they gain independence? Why not all of them? Some time is spent on this, but nothing in-depth. It was not even close to time spent on the 80 year war with Spain, or the two world wars.

Sorry for dumping all this unsolicited. It's been a major frustration for me for a while. There's a certain level of historic unaccountability engrained in Dutch culture that doesn't sit well with me. And I suspect it might have something to do with how history is taught.
