the rust project likes to vaunt its large governance structure, the wealth of people who have come together to make things happen it also likes to boast about how Moz doesn't employ a majority of the team members but this leaves out that nearly all the rest are volunteershttps://twitter.com/eddyb_r/status/1072449644628725762 …

we sometimes throw around words like "capacity" or "bandwidth", but at the end of the day, it's people who work on Rust, people with individual perspectives, work styles and needs people who can burn out most importantly, people who trade at least some of their time for income

i'm beginning to fear that for all our work to bring in new contributors (worthwhile work! it makes existing contributors' lives easier too!) all the effort will be wasted without a means to support those contributors and even then, we're still privileging those with spare time

without a sea change of corporations sponsoring work on open-source projects - many times, the open-source projects whose work they profit from - it's all just a way for people to profit from the free time and goodwill of other people

Seems necessary but not sufficient to me. Setting up the foundation is the easy bit, getting corps to contribute meaningfully to it is much harder

I don't think a foundation is the way to go but my ridiculously long 2019 post will cover this. But yeah we need something.

On the same page here. Fiduciary duty for US foundations seems really hard to work with; hoping the community can find an alternate structure to reach these goals. Good coverage of the topic: http://tinysubversions.com/2013/09/some-thoughts-on-the-igda-or-why-i-quit/index.html …

I'm hesitant on the foundation idea, but why would it have to be a US one?

Excellent question. I guess I (perhaps wrongly) assumed any foundation would most likely be US based.

And where would the funding come from? Would the foundation set up a patreon account and get a lot of people to donate and then the foundation would somehow pay contributors to the rust ecosystem?
