In a way all the fancy distributed tracing views cloud vendors have been adding are generally flame charts. Same for devtools also. I wish vendors would employ a wider variety of visualizations. I reckon it would help a lot with performance tuning.
Also the GH contributions visualization is basically a Flame Scope with the granularity set to 1 day.
Feels like this hierarchy is rather widely applicable!
Fave viz perhaps is the heatmap. Overall much more insightful than scatterplots, bar graphs or line graphs when the distribution might be important. Which is probably in most cases where such visualizations are usually used. Wish I'd learned about those in stats class, hah.
Uh oh. I'm becoming absurdly excited about all these visualizations. Think it could lay the foundation for some Next Level Developer Tooling™.
"Stop it Yosh. You're on vacation." Yep, you're right. Time to log off.
I really enjoy flamegraph-driven-development in the brief moments when my tests pass x'D When you get back I think we should have a heart-to-heart about queue theory and how to keep the CPU braiding your bits with a huge smile on its face
