I get your question of rhetoric, but worth underlining for people reading along: it very much is. The question is what the recourse will be. Will there be any? If so, how? And then what? I think we can all agree that this is not good.

I'm pretty uncomfortable with calling tear gas a chemical weapon since, for me, the term invokes imagery of pretty terrible weapons that governments have used against their citizens recently. I worry/feel like it reduces the impact of the term.

I do agree that this is not good. But using terms that conflate mace with other weapons in this class is a bit much...

I feel like I should add a bit more context on why this bothers me... when I read your tweet I thought we had launched some pretty serious stuff on a missle over a border and was mortified. I read the article and had a moment of “oh, it’s just tear gas”

My response of “oh it’s just” makes me really uncomfortable because this is a super terrible situation. I don’t feel that starting with terms that add uncecessary gravity to an already messed up situation helps, it causes people like me to walk back and lose perspective...

I think you and I are on different pages here. The US firing chemical weapons on children makes me in no way go: "Oh but well actually these weapons are less lethal than some other variants, so don't call them chemical weapons please."

They're literally chemical weapons. Fired upon unarmed civilians in another sovereign nation. With kids & parents mixed in there; quite visibly so. I'm in no fucking mood to belittle the situation the US has created here.

Sure, just sharing what I heard vs. what you meant.

Not exactly. You were calling me out on the language I used, and I don't take well to that in this situation.

That’s fair, apologies.
