Oh wow, apparently using SIMD (AVX-2/AVX-512) on Intel CPUs can actually slow down overall performance. SIMD performs more computations in a shorter time, which means more heat, which means CPUs might bring down their clock speed. That's just. On a similar note, AVX-2 is why people who do overclocking, benckmarks, and stress-tests no longer recommend Prime95. It abuses that instruction, generating atypical amounts of heat, and few programs use AVX-2.https://discourse.codinghorror.com/t/is-your-computer-stable/3978/43 …

This is super interesting, thanks for sharing! I wonder how much of this is chicken/egg tho. If more people used the instructions, perhaps chip manufacturers would take more care in optimizing? That is, if this could be solved at all. I have no clue about chips though, hah.
