I'm really wondering about good patterns for error handling between threads. I feel that Erlang's OTP library / golang's goroutines might have some good patterns, but I don't know enough about them. I'm guessing there's going to be multiple different patterns for it right?

I want to say that an OTP supervisor tree is really just a chain of futures, but I'm worried I'll never get invited to an Erlang conference again...

You are welcome back! As long as you have a construction which shows how an OTP supervisor is a chain of futures (I can see why you might say that, but I find it somewhat nontrivial to establish).
