Binding to everything by default with no way to change it is a bad default. Redis did that for ages and it was a mistake.

Could you elaborate a bit? You mean having three ways of detecting a port isn't good? Curious to hear why, I'm unfamiliar with the downsides.

.bind("*", port) will bind to every available interface on a machine, potentially opening up your server to the outside world. You might not want to do that (and instead bind to 127.0.0.1 only by default and allow to bind to specific interface when selected)
