So I think there's a lot of wisdom in relaxing the purity of a vision so it can actually be distributed. I don't think it's even quite a "wizards in an ivory tower" vs. "hackers who get things done" dichotomy. Maybe it's more about recognizing what people can agree on *now*.
Seems related to theories of moderate vs radical change in politics... I wonder if anyone has done a direct comparison with tech paradigm shifts
Yeah, Semantic Web fell into exactly this trap. I wonder what changed between WWW and SW? * Original WWW started by solving a real problem, SW didn't? * Tim had more influence the second time around, and vision vs pragmatism got out of balance? * second system syndrome?
I'd love to think about and study this more.
