What makes a piece of software a “place” vs a “tool” or an “appliance”? I think some notion of limitlessness and nesting are necessary.

  8. Oh my god. So there's a manga Steve Jobs biography, featuring a manga Alan Kay. "Not bad... but as far as seeing the future goes, 'round these parts, you're merely second place." (source: )

  13. The text editor Kakoune does this well. It has no tiling or tabbing, leaving that up to you. Plugins also adhere to this, for example here's the fzf.kak plugin running in iTerm and tmux. The pane it opens for you to select a file is provided by the terminal emulator.

It's amazing how many common "idioms" there are in software, particularly for organizing stuff -- and yet how hard it is to actually reuse these idioms across apps. My advisor Daniel Jackson has been thinking about this for a while:

Wondering what it would be like if programs that have a notion of “tabs” or “windows” got rid of them, and focused on just presenting/editing one file/page/note, and left the tabbing/windowing and other multiplexing stuff up to the operating system.

I like to think about data as a place.Somewhere I can visit, observe and look around. Even have a slide in few of my talks It used to be more of an intuition, now i can see similarities to your metaphor, free interaction and adaptability of representation

One advantage a VR chorded keyboard might have over a real one is that we could annotate the fingers with the options as the user chords, aiding in learnability.

Last I checked text input in VR still isn’t that great. But Valve’s knuckle VR controllers can track your fingers. I wonder if this capability could be used to create a decent virtual chorded keyboard like the one in this article.🤔
