The versions differ slightly between websites, logins, and so on, but the core text is always the same. There is literally zero case to be made that any federal prosecutor's access to this kind of data is illegal.
But there's a good reason for Trump &co. to be freaking out about this. A lot of people have already testified under oath about not having done various things during the transition. This cache is almost certainly full of evidence of repeated perjury.
Now Trump and his surrogates keep beating the drum of firing Mueller. One big thing that could make it even harder for them to do so? If they tried to do it in response to Mueller indicting Trump's immediate family members.
While Trump may not understand this, enough people around him do that they're trying *very hard* to restrain him. I'm sure this will ultimately fail, but you can watch it in action right now.
Also, NB: A lot of Mueller's evidence, especially testimony given as part of a plea, is "sealed until the conclusion of the investigation." This means that simply shutting down the investigation becomes a very bad idea for Trump.
Not least because I would be entirely *shocked* if it didn't uncover evidence of quite a few state crimes, especially in New York and Florida, which could send his entire family to prison for years.
And, since the Trump Organization basically exists to facilitate the family's business dealings, that makes it highly likely that the various states, if not the FBI, can sue it directly and seize any assets he hasn't managed to hide outside the country.
Trump himself, I suspect, only understands this occasionally; he doesn't show signs of long-term understanding of anything. He's as close a model to Skinnerian stimulus-response as I've ever seen in a person.
But people around him – Kushner, Sessions, Don Jr., Eric, the Царевна Негумания (Ivanka) – as well as various other people who know they're going to be implicated, *do* understand this. And have reason to start protecting themselves.
So there's a race between Trump slipping out of someone's control and trying to fire Mueller, Mueller setting it up to make it an even *worse* idea for him to do so, and Trump's associates trying to hide assets and otherwise protect themselves.
Gonna be an interesting week.pic.twitter.com/0vG4Bc8l9y
