To me, it seems there are a few things missing in order not to break the web. Especially for mobile browsing. 1) The intent to ship Feature Policy. 2) A option for sites who need UA info at first nav request, as arrival of Origin Policy is still far in the future.

1) https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/d/msg/blink-dev/A4wxFpvqUfA/g7iccl9ICgAJ … is the intent for shipping the related infrastructure, including the FP pieces. 2) We're working on first nav solutions, but concluded them to be non-blocking, as most of the current use-cases can live with brand, major version (& maybe mobile bit)

If I need to adapt my stuff to not use UA but don’t have CH on first nav, using brand and major version seems like a poor solution, almost as bad as UA. And even then, I can’t intuit viewport widths. This is going to be super painful for IMGs. :(

Images are typically subresources, so you have enough in-between requests to opt-in to Viewport-Width & DPR client hints

As I understand it this leaves us without a Web API to obtain the browser version: client-side JS must open a request & read client hint headers. I'd love advice on a better alternative for those rare situations where responding to vendor info is genuinely the right thing to do.

https://wicg.github.io/ua-client-hints/#interface … The getUserAgent method gives you that info on the client

Thanks for the heads-up! Any idea when we'll get builds with the new Sec-CH-UA header, so we can start testing this?

You can already test it in Canary behind the experimental web features flag (even if there are still a few changes that we need to get in before shipping)
