I just went to get my son’s Epi-pen prescription refilled and was told they’re out of stock due to a “national shortage.” ...is this actually a thing???

My dr told me not to worry about exp dates on my epi pens. I no longer have insurance so I carry my expired one with me.

Same w/ my dr. She said even an expired one is better than none at all, as long as the liquid hasn't turned brown. If it's clear, I still keep it as backup backup backup.

Hearing your tweet and the prior one is sad and maddening. No one should have to check to see if their medicine has turned brown.

It is sickening and maddening, agreed. An expired epipen is better than no epipen in a life saving emergency, though. People should keep expired ones on hand until they have enough new ones to cover emergencies.

I travel often, and frequently to far-reaching parts of the globe where I'm 24 hours away from the nearest hospital, out in the wilderness. I carry at least two Epipens that haven't expired, and two more expired ones, just in case. I'm prone to random fits of anaphylaxis, so...

There is a small see through window on the side of epi pens so you can check to see if they are really outdated or not by the color of the medicine. Also don’t let the pharmacy fill your prescription with pens whose expiration date is just a few months away instead of full year.

Also, epinephrene is very cheap and so are syringes. I wouldn’t recommend this for children but most adults can operate a regular shot as well as a pen. It allows for customized doses and needle size too.

I don’t know how many states allow otc purchase of needles. Not on the west coast.

Intravenous needles are restricted. Not subcutaneous. You can easily ask your doctor for needles, a disposal kit and ephedrine prescription. As well premarking the required dose on the needles. (My pharmacist premarks my needles with red sharpie reason we love Taiwan.)

Taiwan is a country. I used to live in California. They would not mark the needles there. Makes it easier since I use three of different meds to have them marked.
