Fascinating history of left- and right-hand driving with a few surprising. My favourite mini-fact is that Pakistan decided to not change from left to right because it is hard to teach old camels new tricks....🐪

This is great work from and others. Big animals & plants are more than just spectacular to see. They matter in so many ways.

Of course the small things matter too! We love ants, termites, bees etc and the important role they play (just getting this in before gets me…)

Big animals and trees are often a conservation focus for charisma reasons. In this paper we try and provide a scientific underpinning for why the big things matter for the whole ecosystem.

Large animals shape habitats, accelerate the nutrient cycle, move nutrients over landscapes and seascapes. This is why holding onto the matters for the biosphere, as does and restoring megafauna where possible.

Large trees contribute disproportionately to biomass carbon storage, productivity, nutrient cycling and more, but take a long time to recover from disturbance. This is a reason why matter

Our new paper in : “The are disproportionately important for functioning”. Provides a theoretical basis for why largest animals and trees (megabiota) matter for a healthy biosphere, and why they are particularly vulnerable. Led by

This wonderful biography of one of my mentors, Paul Jarvis, written by John Grace, is also an excellent overview of the development of our understanding of forest carbon & water relations. Strongly recommended!

Impressive gathering of Brazilian Amazonian indigenous leaders in Oxford today to call out the increasing threats to their communities and rights in Brazil: Raoni, Davi Kopenawa, Megaron, Joenis Wapixana and others. Joined at the end by some Maasai representatives!

Ten personal thoughts on the presidency/process, drawing on observations and lessons learned from the past 10+ years or so of following the COP process in various guises (government; adviser; researcher), beginning in the run-up to Copenhagen in early 2009:
