Looking at the SF public tax records and realizing that my old landlord paid only $1,500/yr of tax on a 6-unit commercial rental building easily worth $4M. Artificial scarcity of housing plus Prop 13... insult to injury.

Not just insult... Prop 13 encourages scarcity by discouraging real estate turnover (why sell my old house for a new one of similar price if I'm going to be paying 10x as many taxes on the new one)

Every daycare we visited had a wait list 3x its enrollment. We visited a home daycare run by a woman with wonderful reviews. It was in a top floor apartment with no AC that breaks 100°F in the summer. I thought "this woman needs better facilities and someone needs to build them."

My
#YIMBYmoment was when my decent paying entry-level job working for a non-profit housing developer in the city isn’t enough for me to afford to even rent a private room, let alone a studio apartment on the peninsula.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

My first

Hearing at a public review that a new six story building would “block out the sun and ruin our quality of life”, only to find out the commenter was a landlord who owns several local properties

For me it was reading Green Metropolis by David Owen (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1594484848/typepad0c2-20 …). Blew my mind to realize than Manhattan is so much greener than the rest of the country. I'm a YIMBY because of climate change and affordability.

When I realized major employers had packed up and left my hometown, there was hardly any entry-level housing stock available, job opportunities were limited for my husband, and I couldn't get a good job as a lawyer that would support the cost of living
