What you implied was that the merchants don’t count if they aren’t locals. Local merchants are incredibly important to the health of our city and prioritizing them as such, wherever they live, is the point.

Maybe I'm reading too much into Mark's tweet but I think he was asking something along the lines of "how do they get to their stores"? It seems like there's a strong car bias that doesn't correlate with how their customers actually get around

About drivers, merchants tell me... 1) Their business is easier to purchase from when you drive (i.e. hardware stores selling large items, places selling bulk goods) or 2) Their business is visited by displaced communities (Chinese, Latino) who drive in from outside SF

Which makes it complicated. I was discussing this w/ a friend the other day when talking about going car-free. Every once in a while you have to interface with a part of society designed solely around cars. Long term, maybe that'll change. Short term, it requires sacrifice.

1) I bought one of these. I take it on the 22 to buy 28-pound bags of cat litter and stock up on groceries. Works great: https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/pop-n-shop-utility-cart/1018078643?skuId=18078643&&mrkgcl=609&mrkgadid=3253103140&rkg_id=0&enginename=google&mcid=PS_googlepla_nonbrand_storage_local&product_id=18078643&adtype=pla&product_channel=local&adpos=1o3&creative=232470226257&device=c&matchtype=&network=g … On 16th, other than Potrero Center, most is industrial, and what's retail is food & drink. Who are the merchants concerned?

2) Why is it easier/cheaper to drive all the way to the Mission than drive or take a feeder bus to BART? That's a policy failure. Suburbanites learning how to get into the city without driving is necessary discomfort. Suburbs won't improve transit if even SF won't prioritize it.

I mean 2) is fair but that's a bigger question than the simple, obvious one in front of a merchant *right now*. And as for 1), our discussion mostly fixated on home improvement stuff. It's tough to take a new door from Home Depot on a bus.

In case anyone here isn't lurking on Slack (and at the risk of perpetuating certain stereotypes) Mike wanted to share another example of Muni coming through on transporting heavy cargopic.twitter.com/WR2kyHjhVm
