Why do YIMBYs and affordable housing advocates keep fighting each other? Current theory is YIMBYs have concluded that development reduces mean housing costs and affordable housing advocates conclude luxury development reduces affordable housing. But these beliefs don't contradict

fwiw I think @cayimby and @SFyimby are pro-affordable housing; it’s the affordable housing folks that pick fights with YIMBY

I'm looking at threads like this https://twitter.com/David_desJ/status/1123686232326905861?s=19 … These people have come to opposite advice on how to proceed

I'm saying that deregulating housing construction and allowing developers a free hand to increase density in SFBA will make housing less affordable for teachers, not more affordable.

YIMBY in principle is fine. The problem is that most YIMBY groups are funded by developers who want to build whatever the market will generate the most profits for, not what will actually meet affordable housing needs.

I'm still trying to sort out the disagreement then. Can you give an example of a good build and a bad build? Is a good build more likely to be a mid-rise vs a high-rise? Do they require means testing for the occupants?

There are many possible strategies, but a reasonable one would be simply to create favorable zoning only for units that are permanently affordable to an average resident, either through permanently capped rent or for sale at an affordable price. I don't support means testing.

We actually wrote a ballot prop for streamlining just Affordable Housing and now the SF Mayor has reintroduced it along with upzoning for Affordable.https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/amp/SF-Mayor-Breed-wants-to-use-public-land-to-build-13790002.php …
