    Since today is I'll collect some of my Star Wars tweets and threads here, starting with my longread from last year about why the prequels are extremely relevant to the rise of Trumpism and the failure of liberal centrism:

    Revenge of the Sith is actually good in that it accurately depicts how society can be willingly led into fascism through conspiracy theories about "elites" and the use of ethnic scapegoating to explain economic oppression of the masses, and how liberalism is powerless to stop it

    The first part here is so crucial: the plurality of GOP voters want white nationalism. No matter who runs next in the GOP presidential primary, they will be incentivized to move in the direction of what the base wants. It's a demand driven problem.

    One under-appreciated point is that Republicans have manufactured an insoluble demand side problem. Their base inhabits an insulated media ecosystem that runs on existential panic. Can’t walk that balk when it careens off the democratic rails.

    I wish North Carolina's state capital wasn't a big city, because as it is we're constantly having to deal with some bigoted lawmaker from bumfuck nowhere writing an anti-gay bill because he happened to witness two men kissing while he was in Raleigh for the legislative session

    How much of Texas legislation is telling Austin it can't do stuff that Republicans dislike? If I said 80%, am I close?

    One of my favorite Kirby creations was Inspector Dan Turpin, who was sort of an author surrogate and a major badass. Turpin's Superman Animated Series design was based on Kirby himself – he was eventually killed while single-handedly facing down Darkseid in a fitting tribute

    Instead of hiding under his desk or calling the police, Kirby just rolled up his sleeves and headed downstairs to the horror of his colleagues. The anonymous callers were gone by the time he arrived – but based on everything we know about Jack Kirby, those Nazi cowards got lucky.
