So since I moved into this place in July, I occasionally heard a weird noise at night. The best way I can describe it is like a really soft steel drum noise. But it’s not playing Under the Sea or any melody. It’s just sort of a weird, random, stuttering noise.

Imagine the noise your typing on a phone would make if your phone made the same noise as someone playing a soft marimba in another room. Like that.

It’s just loud enough that it wakes me up pretty regularly and just inconsistent enough that makes it hard to get back to sleep. I thought about mentioning it to my landlord but I honestly just chalked it up to living in an old building. Old buildings make weird noises, y’know?

Like maybe there was some loose bracket outside that the wind was rattling, or some drippy pipe somewhere. It never creeped me out. I barely thought about it when I wasn’t hearing it.

So last night around 2 am, it wakes me up. I’m annoyed. I decide to go to the bathroom. While I’m in there, I realize the noise has gotten a little louder. I’ve never noticed that before. It’s even louder out in my kitchen, so I follow it to my back window. And I find the source.

There’s a mid-2000s silver VW Jetta parked in front of the garage. Its hazards are flickering on and off in time with the noise. Which isn’t a marimba or leaky pipe. It’s a very short soft honk, the kind your car makes when you use the remote lock/unlock button.

Except it’s stuttering along back there in the dark. I watched it for a minute and it stopped. It wasn’t until I was back in bed that I thought about how freaking weird that is! The noise started up again a few minutes later and kept me up til 4.

I was too freaked out to go look again. *I know* this is some dude who has a broken key fob that does weird stuff. That’s why the car is parked in the back of the lot. The owner knows it’s broken and kind of weird, so they park it out there instead of getting it fixed.

Because IDK, they drive a 2006 VW Jetta, they’re probably using the money to buy a new book on vape tricks or something instead. But deep in my lizard brain, I'm just screaming, IT'S A GHOST.
